Why Should You Receive a Massage on a Regular Basis?

We all like a little pampering now and then, but did you know that receiving massages on a regular bais helps to actually decrease cortisol levels by one third on average, according to studies at the Uiversity of Miami School of Medicine and elsewhere. In addition massage reduces stress and promotes the "feel good" hormones to be released.

You may be wondering what function cortisol has in our bodies. Cortisol is released by the Adrenal glands that sit on top of your kidneys. It acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, suppressing the immune system during times of physical and psychological stress. Cortisol directly effects fat storage and weight gain in stressed individuals thus too much cortisol may lead to obesity. Animal and human studies have demonstrated that cortisol injections are associated with increased appetite, cravings for sugar, and weight gain.( Epel, E., R. Lapidus, B. McEwen, et al.)

Lowering stress levels have a direct affect on the amount of cortisol the adrenal glands produce resulting in a decrease in  gravings for sugary foods.

Decreasing your stress  and cortisol levels are  accomplished with daily exercise and regular massages. So don't wait and make your appointment today and experience the results.

What is Actually "Pain?"

Definition: Pain is defined  as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage, according to The International Association for the Study of Pain. It is useful to distinguish between two basic types of pain, acute and chronic, and they differ greatly.

Acute Pain

Acute pain generally comes on suddenly usually after trauma or surgery, It may be accompanied by anxiety or emotional distress. The cause of acute pain can usually be diagnosed and treated Acute pain is self-limiting, that is, it is confined to a given period of time and severity. In some rare instances it can become chronic. If you experience acute pain do seek the advice of your physician.  Do not seek massage therapy at this time.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is widely believed to represent disease itself. It can be made much worse by environmental and psychological factors. Chronic pain persists over a longer period of time than acute pain and is resistant to most medical treatments. It can, and often does, cause severe problems for patients. Long term pain management is an option for most patients.

Medical Massage therapy is extremely effective in alleviating and sometimes eliminating painful conditions. The root of pain may be due to postural distortions, repetitive motion, over stretching.  Whatever the cause I can assist you in reducing or eliminating your pain.
